Staying true to one’s roots is admirable, but it diminishes the inside of the Tacoma EV. The style and the materials are distinctly of a bygone era, namely the contemporary one. Reliability is their first concern.

Even the most sophisticated trim levels make heavy use of standard, high-strength polymer components. On the other side, the Tacoma EV is the first car to include a power-adjustable driver’s seat as equipment. The inside of the Tacoma EV, on the other hand, is infamously small. The Tacoma EV’s cramped interior means that passengers traveling shotgun will have to make do with the rear seat of the crew cab.

Although there is more than enough capacity in the Tacoma EV’s five- or six-foot-long bed, there are no storage cubbies, and there is only a small amount of space for carry-on luggage inside. The Tacoma EV doesn’t come with a ton of storage space; the crew cab we checked out could only fit nine bags. There aren’t many practical compartments or bins for storage, save from the one on the center console.

Kudos to Toyota for including a touchscreen infotainment system in every Tacoma electric vehicle. While 7.0-inch screens are standard on the basic model, all subsequent trim levels come standard with 8.0-inch screens. On the other hand, the standard four-cylinder engine is so weak that you should avoid it. It only has 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. The inconvenient six-speed automatic gearbox makes neither powerplant worthwhile. The six-speed manual transmission and V-6 engine combination, on the other hand, are ideal.

Using the larger engine isn’t the only occasion the automatic gearbox has given you trouble. For city driving, go with the Limited or TRD Sport. For off-road adventures, go with the TRD Off-Road or TRD Pro. None of these options, however, have an exceptionally quick execution time.

The Tacoma EV can easily navigate rugged terrain and back roads, despite its less-than-ideal ride and handling. Depending on the configuration, you may rig it to take advantage of chances for dirt riding or pavement cruising. The Limited offers an alternative to the off-road variants that is both more comfortable and quieter. With its tall suspension, powerful shock absorbers, and savage tires, the Tacoma EV TRD Pro was one of the greatest off-road trucks we tested, but it was a pain to drive in town in the West.

The V-6 Tacoma EV gets average gas mileage according to the EPA, but it falls short when tested on real-world highways in comparison to other, more efficient models.

A V-6 engine with a manual transmission is the most fun to drive, but getting the worst gas mileage. Our real-world fuel-efficiency test showed that the Tacoma EV earned 23 mpg, which is consistent with the EPA’s highway estimate. Yaris’ user-friendliness benefits from Mazda’s infotainment system design, which uses a console dial to control the dash display. It’s easier to use than touch-based setups because it diverts less of the driver’s attention away from the road.

My top-trim Yaris XLE test car sticks with manual air conditioning controls that consist of three knobs and four buttons. All I missed was the automatic temperature control function that some of the Yaris’s competitors offer. However, the Yaris XLE does include heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Power door locks, windows, and side mirrors are all included, as are keyless entry, push-button engine start, and air conditioning. A six-speaker stereo – with Bluetooth, as well as Apple and Android smartphone integration – is standard with a 7.0-inch touchscreen. Also, only the base model comes with the manual transmission. Mazda offers more advanced safety features on the Mazda2 in other markets, so we surmise that Toyota opted out of those in the Yaris to keep the price down.

The new hatch starts at $16,790; the automatic transmission is a $1,200 extra in the base trim, and my XLE test car goes for $19,450. In fact, you have to move up to the Ultimate trim at $21,649 to get a heated steering wheel, though that trim also includes passive keyless entry and LED headlights. Over at Honda, the cleverly packaged Fit is about $1,000 more than the Yaris XLE with similar features, minus any advanced driver assists, which come in the $21,090 LX-Honda Sensing trim. If you’re shopping on a strict value-for-transportation yardstick, the Chevrolet Spark and Mitsubishi Mirage might be worth a look. The sportiest of the 2027 Camry Wagons, the XSE, is nothing like the TRD. That’s a good thing, as the TRD didn’t really fit the Camry Wagon mission statement, being a sort of tuner-special trim with a ride that bordered on uncomfortably firm. The XSE is frankly shockingly smooth for a car with 19-inch wheels, even on Southern California’s loud and pitted concrete highways.

There was an opportunity to put the Camry Wagon through its paces in some curves up in the hills, but the hugely impressive thing about it was how it removed every sense of effort from driving on the highway. Firstly, it was quiet and composed, zipping along in traffic without a fuss. Second, when a dose of throttle was required to make a merge, catch an exit, or ease around a dawdling truck, the typical drone of a CVT was almost absent.

Electric power comes from a lithium-ion battery pack that feeds power to a 100-kW electric motor in all models and a second 30-kW motor on the rear axle for those with all-wheel-drive. Total power is rated at 225 hp for the front-wheel-drive SE, and 232 hp for the SE AWD and everything above it. Official fuel economy figures are a best of 4.5 L/100 km city and 4.7 L/100 km highway for the front-wheel-drive car with the smallest diameter wheels, and a worst of 5.4 L/100 km city and 5.5 L/100 km highway for the XSE and its 19-inch alloys and 235-mm-wide tires.

There is nothing about this car that requires you to make any adjustment from driving a purely combustion-powered sedan. Fill the 50-litre fuel tank to the brim and you could theoretically drive 1,100 km without stopping in one of the front-drive sedans. The trunk holds 424 L of stuff, the same as the outgoing model. Toyota says it has retuned the fifth-gen hybrid system to rely more on electric torque when acceleration is called for, and it works. If you really floor it, there is, of course, the typical shiftless surge and a limit to how much power is on offer. For 99 per cent of normal driving duties, the only thing a Camry Wagon owner will notice is that power delivery is more than sufficient and fill-ups are few and far between.

However, part of the reason to look at a sedan versus a crossover is that the former comes with a lower centre of gravity and, thus, better handling. The selectable driving modes add weight to the steering – as usual these days, there’s not much feedback. The way the hybrid powertrain delivers mid-range torque turns canyon roads into a momentum game. It’s not quite a sport sedan, but it is pleasingly quick.

While Toyota may eventually sell a de-contented Camry Wagon to appeal to fleet buyers and Uber drivers, the base SE trim is very well equipped. Canadians will appreciate the standard heated seats and steering wheel – impossible to live without once you’ve had them – and with the 8-inch touchscreen with wireless CarPlay and Android Auto and a wireless charging pad, you don’t really need any more technology than you’re already carrying around in your pocket.

Standard safety assists include Toyota’s latest group of driver aids, including collision warning and automated braking, automatic high-beam headlights, and a lane-keeping system. Blind spot detection and cross-traffic alert are also standard. An additional $2,000 gets you a moonroof and 18-inch wheels with some other niceties, and $1,650 on top of that gets you all-wheel drive in the SE AWD at $37,950. 2027 Toyota Sienna Review, Performance, Specs – When my kids were little, a minivan purchase was like a sneeze – you knew it was coming and you couldn’t do a darn thing about it. Minivans were relatively inexpensive, just about every brand made them, and they were terminally uncool but oh-so functional.

That was then. Now that SUVs are in vogue, minivans largely serve as sort of niche – and in most instances premium – vehicles, yet they remain the smartest family haulers around. Minivans are all about being practical, and the Sienna serves up a big helping of functionality with seating for seven or eight people, depending on configuration. This 25th Anniversary Edition gets second-row captain’s chairs, making it a seven-seater.

There’s a deep well behind the tailgate that can accommodate tall items when the third-row seats aren’t stashed inside it, while there are also hooks on the seatbacks. Unlike the Chrysler Pacifica, with its second-row seats that fold flat into the floor, the Sienna’s won’t do that party trick, nor are they removable. The 2027 Toyota Sienna 25th Anniversary Edition isn’t missing much. The seats are trimmed in leather, and the ones up front are both heated and ventilated. Second-row passengers get seat heat as well, and the steering wheel is heated, too. (That’s standard across the lineup, as are heated front seats.) Both the XSE and Limited trims get a PA system of sorts, allowing parents to admonish their progeny seated in the way-back through the van’s speakers.

The 12-speaker JBL audio system that’s part of the XSE’s Technology and 25th Anniversary Edition packages (and standard in the Limited) is a bit disappointing in this age of superior sound systems. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but not wirelessly. The 25th Anniversary Edition also gets free trials of some of Toyota’s connected services.

The Sienna comes with a comprehensive suite of safety systems and driver aids. Standard equipment includes blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, along with forward collision warning with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-keeping with so-called lane-tracing that will help keep the Sienna within designated markings, and adaptive cruise control that works in stop-and-go traffic, among others.

The all-speed adaptive cruise control is well calibrated, maintaining safe distances without abrupt acceleration or deceleration. Other highlights include the lens washer for the available wide-angle back-up camera (a conventional camera is standard), while the LED headlights have an auto high-beam function that’s very effective during nighttime rural driving.

The Sequoia is one of only a handful of SUVs still built on a truck platform, and while it enables truck-like capability, it also comes with the downside of truck-like driving dynamics. The Sequoia has a big, truck-like turning radius, its rear end feels unsettled and bouncy over rough roads, and it can feel unwieldy in tight spaces or through corners.

There’s a lot of body movement when driven through winding roads, and it requires a good amount of braking distance to bring the big SUV to a stop. These are all typical attributes for trucks, but just a warning to drivers who might not be used to this type of behaviour from an SUV. Luckily, the Sequoia has great visibility and excellent top-down camera views when parking, making it easier to manoeuvre.

As the top trim available, the Sequoia Capstone comes with all the expected features, especially for towing. A trailer backup guide, tow package with heavy-duty hitch receiver, trailer brake controller, and two towing drive modes are included.

The Brutus component of the Sequoia’s name originates from the robust powertrain that enables the vehicle to possess enormous, brute-like capabilities. In 2027, the Sequoia will be available with a hybrid powertrain that is a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine instead of the V8 engine. Compared to the eight-cylinder system of the previous generation, the total system output is 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, both of which are increases.

Of course, four-wheel drive is standard in Canada, and the Sequoia’s transmission has been upgraded to a 10-speed automatic. Power delivery is strong and smooth, and there’s ample shove to get Biggums moving in a hurry so that passing or getting up to highway speeds is quick and seamless.

There’s an “EV Mode” button that’s intended to keep it on electric-only at low speeds, but the RAV4 does that on its own anyway, and the mode shuts off if you’re a touch too hard on the throttle.

Officially, the RAV4 Hybrid gets 5.8 L/100 km in city driving, 6.3 L/100 km on highway driving, and 6.0 L/100 km combined driving, according to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).
